Being on a mission is probably the most rewarding experience of all experiences. I am so grateful for the opportunities to serve in Kuching at this time. I know that the Lord is continuing to prepare the hearts of others to hear the message of the Gospel. We have seen much success and have truly recognized the hand of the Lord in all that we do. Elder Brown and I continue to work hard and invite everyone to come unto Christ no matter who they are. This past week I have really focused on listening to the voice of the Spirit and always striving to be in tune as I am at work. Before our church meetings Sunday morning, we received a call from the sister companionship in our district. Elder Brown had picked up the phone, talked, hung up and told me that they wanted a Priesthood blessing. We packed up our things and headed over to the church building. As we arrived we met with them and gave them a blessing of comfort. I am so grateful for that opportunity. It has taught me that no matter where I am or what stage of life I am in, we must always continue to listen to the still small voice of the Spirit. Otherwise, we will miss out on the experiences that our Heavenly Father so desperately wants us to have. I am grateful for the Priesthood. I know that it is the power of God. I have a testimony that our Heavenly Father loves each of us and is always reaching out.
Elder Brown and I this past Friday as we were at the church building after our lesson with our investigator had the thought to go walk over to the mall and talk with the people there. As we arrived we spent about an hour or two just talking with others but it yielded no success. We were determined to keep going. We knew that although it seemed to be no one who wanted, we both knew that the Spirit wanted us to be there at that time. We searched and searched. Finally, we concluded and were about to head back outside. We came across this lady who was working at one of the shops. We stopped and talked with her for a bit and learned that the missionaries from many years ago came and visited her family when she was young. We testified of the Book of Mormon and the power and protection it has brought into our lives. We offered her a copy and she told us she already had a copy at home. We have an appointment scheduled with her later this week. THE SEEDS THAT ARE PLANTED IN A PERSONS HEARTS ARE NEVER PLANTED IN VAIN. It doesn't matter if it did not work out or perhaps it just wasn't the right time, our effort as a missionary or not is never wasted. As we continue to do all that we can, it will be all worth it. I am grateful for those who have continued to persist and make an effort in inviting others to learn about the restored gospel. It has made all the difference.
When members and missionaries come together that alone will make such a difference! The members in our branch have some of the most powerful testimonies of the Gospel. Each of them are always reaching out a building up. One of the focuses that we talked about with them is coordinating Home teaching assignments and ensuring that they are completed. A goal that Elder Brown and I have is to visit each less active member and help them come back to church and living the Gospel. I have felt the biggest change in my life as I have taken the opportunity to live the Gospel. I know that it is true. I know that Christ really is our Savior and that through him we can do all things that He would have us do.
I wanted to share this scripture with you. It is the same that is on my mission plaque and I feel that I needed to share it along with my testimony.
Alma 26:12
"Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever."
As I entered the field, I knew I possessed certain strengths that would help me and I knew that I had a testimony. Each day I have learned and understood more clearly that without the help of the Lord, I am nothing. I know that. I have learned over and over how dependent I am upon the arm of the Lord. I have felt strength beyond my own and I know that the Savior lives. I know that He will reach out to us. I know without a doubt that He will take us by the hand and lead us home in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Love ,
Elder Shirley
