Week 44...Missionary Work in Singapore

September 4, 2016

I love being a missionary. The opportunity to share the Gospel and to dedicate everything that you are to doing is one of the greatest opportunities that has ever been given to me! I love the missionary work. An experience I had just the other day was a powerful reminder to me the promises of the Lord. I was on a short exchange with Elder Bloem and we were having a practice baptismal interview with one of the people that they have been working with. As we were nearing the end of the lesson, the investigator expressed that it would be difficult to keep the Sabbath day Holy because of certain activities that she was involved in. We talked to her about the importance of keeping the Sabbath day and then a very interesting promise came to my mind.

Malachi 3:10
"Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse... and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

I love this scripture because the Lord is basically daring us to try. I like to imagine the Lord saying to me, "PROVE ME, TEST ME, if I will not open of the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing... This scripture can be rewritten a number of ways...

Open your mouth to all nations...
Read the Scriptures daily...
Obey mine Words of Wisdom...
Keep my Sabbath day Holy...
Keep thy body clean...

... and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

I know that the Lord will provide a blessing to those who truly give all that they have to the Lord. He always has and He always will. I have a testimony that the Lord will always deliver and that He will continue to build us up and will never forsake us.

The other day, Elder Bringhurst and I had the opportunity to attend Stake Conference and be able to really feel the Spirit and to learn a lot. Sunday night we really didn't have any other plans set out and so we had the thought to call one of our less active members and see if we could meet with him. Amazingly enough he answers his phone and we scheduled a meeting with him 30 minutes from that time. As we entered into his home, I noticed that he had his Book of Mormon on the table. I asked him where he had been reading at and he opened up to Third Nephi 11 and read with him.

3 And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.

4 And it came to pass that again they heard the voice, and they understood it not.

5 And again the third time they did hear the voice, and did open their ears to hear it; and their eyes were towards the sound thereof; and they did look steadfastly towards heaven, from whence the sound came.

6 And behold, the third time they did understand the voice which they heard; and it said unto them:

7 Behold my Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, in whom I have glorified my name—hear ye him.

As we talked with him, I felt the Spirit burn within my own heart and my testimony of the Savior Jesus Christ was strengthened. I knew for myself that the Savior lives and that he is the Son of God. Our lesson with our less active was short and simple but was a powerful reminder to me of how important our scripture study is. Study the Scriptures. They are the words of Christ. They will lead us in the direction we need to go.

The members in the Chinese 2nd ward are incredible. I love them to bits. I am so grateful for the willingness to engage in missionary work. They are simply incredible. Our goal is to be able to work with the members to reactivate those who are less active and then to work with others that they know. A couple of our YSA recently have gotten their mission calls. Alex was a convert a little less than a year ago and was recently call to the China, Hong Kong mission! We hope to be able to serve them the best that we can and help them in whatever they need to do. The Spirit is there and I am excited to see where it goes in the future.

A scripture that I wanted to share is found in Doctrine and Covenants 82:10

"I, the Lord, am bound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no promise."

I know that the Lord will deliver what he has promised to deliver. As we do our part and exercise our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, He will provide not only the way to accomplish it, but the blessings that come with it. I love the Lord. He truly is my light. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Love,
Elder Shirley

Week 76..."This past week has been one of faith and might!"

This week, I had the opportunity to watch conference which was an absolute blast! I love hearing from the prophets and apostles speak and offer counsel to those that are seeking it. How grateful I am that our Heavenly Father in this period of time has a prophet upon the earth. I have a testimony that as we heed the words of the prophet and those that are called alongside him, that we will never go astray. This past week has been one of faith and might! I am grateful for the opportunity to come and serve the people of Singapore. It hasn't always been easy but I can honestly say it has been all worth it! A simple principle of faith that I learned from General Conference was what Elder Choi had said saying, "Don't look around, Look up!" I have learned that if all that I do is look around, I can never progress, however, as I continue to steadfastly look up toward heaven, then I find myself changing in so many ways. Axxxxx is awesome! She is something else...

Week 75...Experiences that have increased my faith and built my testimony up this week.

The things you get to learn on a mission are just awesome! I am so glad that I decided to serve the Lord for two years. I would be nowhere close to where I am at right now. I am indeed grateful for the experiences that I have been able to have on my mission and for what they have taught me personally. I know that the Lord, Jesus Christ is very well aware of what I go through and is continuing to lift me up every hour of the day. I know that He lives. His love is real and extends to all who seek it. I wish to share with you some of the experiences that I have had this week that have increased my faith and built my testimony up. Trust in the Lord.  I have really felt the need to say that after the many challenges and trials that seem to be never ending, that I simply can not do it on my own. If I continue to try and do something on my own and just push forward, then I have already failed. I cannot do it on my own. It is sometimes painful to admit that because I feel that in orde...

Week 71...The Sound of Rejoicing

March 5, 2016 Hello! I love the Gospel of Jesus Christ! It is honestly the best thing ever. I know that sometimes it feels like the Gospel can only apply to those that we teach and share with but first and foremost it is to strengthen yourself and give you the confidence and boost of energy that you need throughout the week. I love the Savior Jesus Christ. He is my teacher and exemplar and I look to Him as one of my closest friends and for that I am eternally grateful. This week I have been thinking to myself how I could better help those people that I have been working with feel the power of the Spirit and to continue to be excited to meet again and learn. It was also something that I have been thinking about as we contact other people in Singapore. We do strive to talk with everyone and look for opportunities to serve those around us, however, I have felt that we weren't yielding the same success as weeks prior. Then everything changed!  D&C 28:16 "And thou m...
